Compassionate Courage Quartet

Music can heal and this is precisely what Julia Lipkis proceeds to do through her “Compassionate Courage Quartet”: In a world full of divisions, as we seek to heal and build bridges, music might be that bridge. Music transports us into a world where words may not be necessary and yet help us listen from her heart. That is the goal of Compassionate Courage -- getting people to truly listen to one another, without judgement or without feeling the need to insert our own perspective. Enjoy Julia’s quartet and read her brief description of her piece. Enjoy!

“As an amateur violinist who has played in many orchestras and other ensembles over the years, I’ve found that music can often serve as a bridge between individuals, allowing people to express their emotion and feeling when sometimes words do not suffice.

My goal in creating this short piece was to replicate a difficult discussion or dialogue in musical terms. The Compassionate Courage Quartet is written for four instruments: two violins, a viola and a cello. The piece begins with a plaintive theme from a solo violin--perhaps it is a question, a complaint, or simply a cry for understanding and acknowledgement. Then the three other instruments come in and build upon the original theme, providing harmony, support and their own interpretations. While the piece is mostly in minor, the quartet ends on a major chord, bringing brightness to the ensemble and a glimmer of hope.”
